The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Y.D Ahmed, has revealed that corps members across Nigeria will be included in the ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage. This announcement was made on Saturday during his visit to the NYSC orientation camp in Sagamu, Ogun State.

Addressing the 2,762 corps members participating in the three-week orientation course, Brigadier General Ahmed reassured them that they would benefit from the current salary negotiations. He commended their active participation in the program and encouraged them to uphold the discipline and collective spirit fostered during their time in the camp.

Additionally, the NYSC Director-General issued a stern warning against the posting of unauthorized pictures of camp activities on social media. He noted that three corps members had already been decamped for violating this rule. Furthermore, he cautioned them against undertaking unauthorized journeys, emphasizing the Scheme’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all corps members until they complete their national service and return home.

This announcement comes amidst an ongoing debate between organized labour and the Federal Government regarding the implementation of a new minimum wage. The tripartite committee recommended a wage of N62,000, while state governors proposed N57,000, and organized labour insisted on N250,000.

The Federal Government has indicated that President Bola Tinubu will conduct further consultations with governors and the private sector before finalizing the new minimum wage.

As the negotiations continue, the inclusion of NYSC corps members in the new wage discussions underscores the government's recognition of their contributions and the importance of ensuring fair compensation for their service.
